When considering the building of a new, custom home, there are numerous factors that will have to be taken into consideration – one of which is just exactly how long you can anticipate the project lasting from start to finish.
Although there are no specific, one-size-fits-all answers to this question, some helpful stats from the U.S. Census Bureau’s “Survey of Construction” may be able to help you get at least a better idea.
For example, overall across the United States, it can take an average of about seven months to build a single-family house. However, for a custom built home, this process can take somewhat longer, with an average of closer to eight months.1
That being said, there are some other criteria that could skew these figures somewhat. For instance, the location of the property can make a big difference. In this case, the weather can be a key driver of how long a home takes to complete. In the colder northern states, for example, the process could cause delays – sometimes of two or three months, depending on the severity. Alternatively, homes that are being constructed in the warmer southern locales could be completed in less time than the average.2
The type of area in which the property is actually located may also help or hinder the time frame. If, for instance, the building lot is in an already established area, the process will usually take less time than the building of a home that will also need to have plumbing and electricity established in the area.
Having a good plan in place prior to getting started can also be a key criteria. This is especially the case if there are no major revisions to the plan as the building process proceeds. Working with your builder early in the process can help you to ensure that everyone is “on the same page” from the beginning.
