Negotiating Price with a Custom Home BuilderWhen moving forward with the building of a new custom home, most people will want to ensure that they’re getting a quality product, while at the same time, not completely overspending on the property. While it may be a commonly known practice to negotiate price in some areas, such as decorating and outdoor landscape, custom home builders are, for the most part, not as likely to give a discount – at least not up front.

But there are still some techniques that you can use that can help you to ensure that you’re not paying too much, while still keeping your future home unique and personalized to your specific tastes.

For instance, in some cases, the builder that you choose will allow you to supply certain items yourself, such as the plumbing and / or lighting fixtures, and some or all of the appliances. You may find that, after doing a bit of research, you can save at least some amount of money by going this route. In other cases, though – especially if there isn’t much difference in cost – it may still be well worth it to let the builder include these items in their overall price.

Depending on just how hands-on you are, you may be ready, willing, and able to do some or all of the painting and / or tile work yourself. Here again, though, if this is a task that you enjoy, then it may help you to save a few dollars, while at the same time allowing you to partake in a fun activity. Otherwise, this too may be best left to the building pros.
